If you’re like most website owners, search engines are at the top of your marketing to-do list. Everyone wants to be on the first page of search results for their area of business, but few understand how to get that coveted position.

The truth is that there’s no exact science to search engine optimization. Most strategies are complex and none are fail-safe. However, in the hands of a search engine expert, your website can move to a higher ranking over time.

We’ll look at every aspect of your website and develop two strategies: short and long term.

Short Term Strategies: The first month

  • Develop a list of 10-20 keywords. Rank them in order of importance and feasibility. Attack the top three right away!
  • Participate in pay-for-placement programs with companies like Google and Overture
  • Fix obvious “code” problems that prevent search engines from cataloging your web pages
  • If it hasn’t been done already, add META tags and submit your website to the top 7 search engines
  • Where possible, change page titles and headlines to incorporate target keywords

Long Term Strategies: The first six months

  • Identify and solicit linking partners
  • Revise website copy to incorporate keywords
  • If necessary, clean up code and revise website design to facilitate cataloging by search engine spiders

Before you begin any SEO project, be forewarned: it requires a deep commitment on your part and may involve significant changes to you website. However, because search engines give the best sites top-ranking, the changes are always for the better.
